DEMOLITION OF MANITOUWADGE HIGH NEARING COMPLETION
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Demolition continues at the old Manitouwadge High School on Oshweeken Road this week as crews from Collins Hauling, contracted by Superior Greenstone District School Board, work their way through the building. Hundreds of desks have been put out on the front lawn and are free to take by anyone who could put them to use (at your own risk of course) said the jobsite foreman.
The decision to demolish the building was made at the Superior-Greenstone District School Board regular meeting of June 20, 2011; moved by School Trustee Cindy Brown and Seconded by School Trustee Darlene Keenan a motion was carried that:
“the Superior-Greenstone DSB having received Report No. 09 (IC): Demolition of Old Manitouwadge High School does approve the demolition of the old Manitouwadge High School building, and that, the demolition be scheduled as soon as possible, subject to Ministry funding.”
Today, OntarioNewsNorth.com was given a completion date, by the jobsite foreman from Collins Hauling, of approximately 8-10 days at which time Manitouwadge residents will have a direct view of the lake from Oshweeken Road or the backyards of homes on Heron Ave. where they had been looking at an empty and deteriorating Manitouwadge High School building for approximately 15 years.
The Manitouwadge High School building on Oshweeken Road no doubt held many memories for teachers and students who worked and studied there during it’s years of use but one group may have their memories brought back as demolition continues. The Collins Hauling crew has been advised of a ‘time capsule’ which was put in the wall of the boys bathroom (upper level) behind one of the bricks and have promised to watch for it as their demolition continues, of course OntarioNewsNorth.com will keep readers posted should the capsule be found!
