New Medical Officers of Health for District of Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, ON – The Thunder Bay District Board of Health is pleased to announce that Dr. David Williams has been appointed as the Medical Officer of Health effective the beginning October 2011, and will be joined by Dr. Janet DeMille in the position of Associate Medical Officer of Health as of September 2012.

As the former MOH/CEO for the TBDHU from 1991 to 2005, Dr. Williams brings 14 years of dedicated service to the District along with 6 years of provincial public health expertise as the Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health and Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health with the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC).

Dr. DeMille has been a clinical physician within the District for over 10 years, including 5 years in the TBDHU’s clinical services. She is currently completing the Royal College certification in Public Health and Preventive Medicine through the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and will be eligible to practice as a medical officer in Ontario upon completion of the program in the summer of 2012.

The combination of Dr. Williams and Dr. DeMille strengthens the TBDHU’s position as a key provider of public health services, delivered by a highly-qualified team of health professionals.

This scenario provides the TBDHU with ongoing leadership stability and resolves succession planning challenges for positions that have been typically difficult for public health units to fill,” says Maria Harding, Board of Health Chair.

“We are fortunate to have found locally experienced physicians with such dedication to public health and a commitment to the District. We are excited about the team and look forward to their leadership.”

Dr. Sam Graham will continue as Acting MOH until Dr. William’s arrival, this fall. The Board of Health thanks Dr. Graham for his unfailing service to the TBDHU.
