Airplane Collision Closes Hwy 17 for hours (near Marathon)

AIRPLANE COLLISION 

MARATHON, ON – Thursday August 18, 2011 at 12:25pm the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded call for a small airplane that crashed at the Marathon Airport on Highway 17 just West of Marathon.

A small airplane that was attempting to take off from the airport ran out of runway and clipped a fence causing it to lose control, hit a light pole, and come to rest in the ditch alongside Highway 17. The pilot, a male from Winnipeg, received minor injuries and was transported to Wilson Memorial General Hospital, treated and later released.

A local tow company attended the scene and removed the airplane but the highway was closed for approximately 2 hours at what point 1 lane was opened to traffic. The highway was opened to full traffic at approximately 4:00pm

The investigation is continuing regarding this collision.
