Terrace Bay Lighthouse Opens
TERRACE BAY, ON – The newest iconic attraction on the north shore of Lake Superior was opened to the public on Tuesday, July 12 and the response from visitors has been incredibly positive.
Terrace Bay Council approved the opening of the lighthouse at their Monday night Council meeting and on Tuesday morning they greeted visitors into the lighthouse. A steady stream of visitors has been noted so far and comments usually range from how beautiful the view is to how they didn’t think it was really that tall.
The lighthouse is a 50 foot attraction based on the lighthouse at the Slate Islands which is the tallest on the Great Lakes sitting at 224 feet about sea level. The Terrace Bay Lighthouse is situated at the entrance to Simcoe Plaza, the main shopping area in Terrace Bay, which is also directly off the Trans Canada Highway. The lighthouse is the centerpiece of the $3 million downtown revitalization project and is designed to attract visitors into the downtown with its magnificent views of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. The lighthouse also features a coin-operated 50x viewing scope which on clear days provides an opportunity to spot a woodland caribou on one of the beaches at the Slate Islands.
Terrace Bay Mayor Michael King says “We really believe the lighthouse will attract visitors travelling the highway to stop in our community and shop at our stores. Additionally, we have rebranded Terrace Bay based on the lighthouse so it will be what our Municipality is associated with similar to the Wawa goose.” An official grand opening ceremony for the downtown revitalization project will be held on Wednesday July 20, 2011 in the centre of Simcoe Plaza from 11am to 1pm – Don’t miss the fun!
