The opening of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal in 1895 marked the completion of an all- Canadian waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior. The Superintendent’s Residence served as living quarters for the Superintendent and his family from 1897 until 1980. The house was the site of many gatherings over the years and visits to the Canal grounds on summer Sundays were a long standing tradition in the community as residents flocked to watch the passenger boats lock through.
