McGuinty Government Keeping Ontario Families Safe

Ontario boaters can help keep the lakes and waterways safer for everyone this summer by practicing safe boating.

Whether you are operating a motor boat, jet ski or paddling a canoe or kayak, these tips can help make your summer safer:

  • Everyone on a boat, including the operator and all passengers, should wear an approved lifejacket or personal flotation device
  • Make sure your boat is equipped with all the recommended safety equipment.
  • Stay sober. Boaters caught drinking and boating in Ontario face consequences similar to those for drinking and driving:
    • Immediate three-, seven- or 30-day driver’s licence suspension if caught with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in the “warn” range of 0.05 to 0.08.
    • Drivers caught in the “warn” range more than once will face a mandatory alcohol education program, and could be subject to treatment programs and ignition interlock
    • Immediate 90-day driver’s licence suspension and a $150 administrative monetary penalty for boaters exceeding a 0.08 BAC – or for refusing to provide a breath sample
  • Always check weather conditions before you get on the water – operate at a safe speed and be aware of the activity around you.
  • Get training to help make smart, safe choices when boating.

QUICK FACTS

  • In 2006, Ontario’s sanctions for impaired drivers were extended to include boat operators.
  • Ontario’s impaired boating law also applies to the operation of motorized watercraft such as jet skis and non-motorized boats, including inflatable rafts, canoes and kayaks.
