MANITOUWADGE, ON – Monday, June 27, Grade 8 students of Our Lady of Lourdes Seperate School gathered at their church for a mass, awards ceremony and supper in their honour.  After the mass, led by Father Manuel, Principal Diane Nelson addressed those in attendance to offer the students best wishes, remembering some of the highlights of the years they had spent at OLOL, for many it had been 10 years since they first enterred Junior Kindergarten at the school.  Superior North District School Board Director Barb Spadoni also spoke to the graduates reminding them of the many choices that will be before them in years to come at high school, the Manitouwadge students are in a somewhat unique position, as they now enter the public school system after a decade with their Catholic school board as their is not a Catholic secondary school in Manitouwadge.  Manitouwadge High School Teacher Ted Lalonde, who is familiar with many of the students through his volunteer coaching of many sports, welcomed them in advance to MHS on behalf of Principal John Mutch.

Fellow Graduate and Student Council President Denika Jomphe, introduced Valedictorian Briar Hunter who presented a very eloquent speech.  Hunter surprised her parents whom she had not told in advance that she had earned the honour of Valedictorian as the student with the highest grades, they were clearly moved by the very thoughtful gesture.  During her speech, Hunter recognized École Publique Franco-Manitou, the French Language school she attended from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 7 before transferring to OLOL’s English program.

The students were presented with their diploma’s by English Grade 8 teacher Aaron Baker and French Immersion Grade 8 teacher Anik DeMars before being recognized with special merit awards which included:
