NISHNAWBE-ASKI POLICE PROVIDE COMMUNITY SERVICE TO PETS
NEW OSNABURGH, ON – Nishnawbe-Aski Police officers working to help evacuate and protect the community members of Mishkeegogamang First Nation ensured that they serve and protect all community members – even the pets.
During the course of the 67,748 hectare fire that caused many residents to quickly leave their homes for two weeks, officers stayed back to protect the homes, public and private buildings on the First Nation territory. It was evident that there were dogs and cats that couldn’t travel out to the evacuation points. The officers approached the Chief and Council of Mishkeegogamang who didn’t hesitate to allow funds to go towards the purchase of dog and cat food. The officers took it upon themselves, including the Pickle Lake O.P.P. members assisting during the evacuation, to provide the food and water to the pets.
This successful initiative dubbed “Operation Dingo and Operation Lady” after the names of two local pets, ensured that when the Mishkeegogamang residents arrived back to their community, their pets were healthy and waiting for their return.
Mishkeegogamang First Nation is approximately 315 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
