Manitouwadge Expecting Evacuees – Current Fire Situation in Ontario

MANITOUWADGE, ON – The Township of Manitouwadge issued a press release this afternoon announcing that Mayor John MacEachern has declared a State of Emergency in the community as we prepare to host approximately 150 evacuees from Northwestern Ontario communities affected by forest fires. 

There are currently 105 active fires in Ontario (99 of these in the Northwest Region) with 10 new fires having been declared today.  Warm weather continued today with winds blowing smoke across Northern Ontario.  Even in Manitouwadge, where the nearest active fires are currently Nipigon 50 (0.5ha) and Thunder Bay 44 (1ha) , both listed as under control, skies are clearly smokey.

Mayor MacEachern asked residents “Please help out in welcoming the people coming to our community during these trying times” in the release which assured there would be updates provided as availalbe.
