Forest Fire Situation Update – Northeast Region

NEW FIRES
Four new fires were reported on Sunday, July 17. Parry Sound 6 is a lightning-caused fire and is out at 0.1 hectares. It was reported on Horn Lake, east of Parry Sound. North Bay 23 is a human-caused fire and is under control at 3.0 hectares. It was reported not far south of Whitestone. Sault Ste. Marie 13 is a human-caused fire and is out at 0.2 hectares. It was reported southwest of Heyden. Timmins 16 is a lightning-caused fire and is out at 0.1 hectares. It was reported about 10 kilometres west of Timmins.
Three new fires were reported by the evening of July 18. Sudbury 36 is a lightning-caused fire and is out at 0.1 hectares. It was reported west of Killarney Provincial Park. Kirkland Lake 8 is a human-caused fire and is out at 0.1 hectares. It was reported near Elk Lake. North Bay 24 is a human-caused fire and is not under control at 0.1 hectares. It was reported near Tomiko Lake. No issues are anticipated with these fires.
ACTIVE FIRES
Three additional fires are active in Cochrane (3) district, all of which are lightning-caused fires and are being monitored. Cochrane 6 is 500.0 hectares in size and was reported southwest of Kashechewan. Cochrane 13 is 600.0 hectares in size and was reported 30 kilometres southeast of Peawanuck. Cochrane 15 is 7.0 hectares in size and was reported west of Attawapiskat.
SPECIAL CONCERNS
Please note that elevated winds could bring smoke into the Wawa region and possibly further downstream.
FIRE HAZARD
The fire hazard is moderate to high in the Northeast Region. The hazard is expected to increasing with drying and heating in the forecast for this week.
SAFETY MESSAGE
Planning on enjoying a campfire this weekend? Keep your fire small, build it on bare rock or dirt, never leave it unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site. Drown! Stir! Drown!
