Fire Situation Update Northeast Region
July 15, 2011 – 5pm
NEW FIRES
Three new fires have been reported for Friday July 15. Sudbury 34 was a 0.5 hectare, human caused fire on an island in Georgian Bay, aproximately 20 kilometres east of Killarney. Sudbury 34 required Air Attack, and is being held by a FireRanger crew with no problems anticipated. Sudbury 35 was a 0.1 hectare, human caused fire four kilometres southwest of the Sudbury Airport. A Fire Ranger crew responded to Sudbury 35 and the fire is now under control. North Bay 22 was a 0.4 hectare, human caused fire located 15 kilometres north of River Valley. Air Attack and a FireRanger crew responded to North Bay 22, there are no issues anticipated with this fire.
ACTIVE FIRES
Two additional fires are active in the region. Cochrane 6 is a lightning-caused fire and is being observed at 500.0 hectares. It was reported southwest of Kashechewan. Cochrane 13 is a lightning-caused fire and is being observed at 600.0 hectares. It was reported 30 kilometres southeast of Peawanuck.
FIRE HAZARD
The fire hazard in the Northeast Region will remain high into the weekend. Predicted cloud cover and showers may lower the hazard as the weekend progresses.
SAFETY MESSAGE
Planning on enjoying a campfire this weekend? Keep your fire small, build it on bare rock or dirt, never leave it unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site. Drown! Stir! Drown!
