Northeast Region Fire Situation Update
July 4, 2011 – 4pm
NEW FIRES – July 3
Three new fires were reported in the Northeast Region on Sunday, July 3 in North Bay (1) and Wawa (2) districts. North Bay 17 was reported on Wicksteed Lake and is being held at 0.5 hectares. Wawa 17 was reported near the community of Hillsport and is out at 0.1 hectares. Wawa 18 was reported not far south of Manitouwadge and is under control at 0.5 hectares.
NEW FIRES – July 4
One new fire was reported by the evening of July 4. Sudbury 27 was reported east of Killarney Provincial Park and is not under control at 0.1 hectares. No issues are anticipated with this fire.
The next couple days will see mainly sunshine with light winds and temperatures in the high twenties. However, some portions of the region will see showers with a risk of thunderstorms.
FIRE HAZARD
The fire hazard is high throughout the entire Northeast Region. Fire activity is expected to increase with drying and lightning across the province.
PROVINCIAL SITUATION
Across Ontario, 10 new fires were recorded in the last reporting period making 24 forest fires active, most caused by lightning. Eight fires are not under control, 12 are being monitored are four are contained. Sioux Lookout 35, the province’s largest fire remains not under control at 78,079 hectares. An Emergency Area Order remains in effect for that area. Two CL415 waterbombers, two other fixed winged aircraft, 11 helicopters and 299 Ontario fire staff are assigned to Sioux Lookout fires.
Planning on enjoying a campfire this weekend? Keep your fire small, build it on bare rock or dirt, never leave it unattended and make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site. Drown! Stir! Drown!
