TERRACE BAY, ON – As a school, St. Martin, has implemented a number of green measures to do their part for the environment. Among the ongoing efforts to be environmentally conscious at the Superior North Catholic School Board elementary school are:

  •  Teachers painting their bulletin boards with environmentally friendly paint thus eliminating the need for paper backgrounds;
  • Classes participating in litterless lunch initiatives;
  • Taking part in a paper recycling program as a school; and
  • JK/SK class purchasing trees for the school yard.

Taking the environmentally friendly efforts the entire school has been active with a step further, St. Martin’s student council decided submitted a grant request to the Sunlight Green Clean Kids program.

The  Sunlight Green Clean Kids program provides funding for young Canadian ‘eco kids’ ages 6 to 13 to share ideas for going green or inspiring green action at home, school or in their community.  The Sunlight Green Clean Kids provide funding for green ideas with a Sunlight Green Grant so participants can make their ideas happen; hoping the initiative can inspire other Canadian kids to go green too! Grants are for buying the supplies eco-kids need.

The Student Council sent an essay describing how they would use the Green Grant to Sunlight’s Green Kids panel and were approved.  The Green Grant was used by St. Martin School to purchase a composter for the school’s outdoor garden and individual classroom composters to continue the litterless lunch initiative. A see-through composter was also purchased for each classroom as an instructional tool.

CONGRATULATIONS!

To St. Martin School & Student Council for their ongoing efforts to protect our planet and live and learn in a more environmentally friendly way!
