One new fire was reported in the Northeast Region on May 18. Sudbury 12, a human caused fire east of Naughton, has been called out at 0.1 hectares. Three fires have been reported so far today, May 19. Wawa 6, east of Upper Laponen Lake, is being held at 2.5 hectares in size. Wawa 7, east of Moran Lake, has been called out at 0.2 hectares in size. Timmins 7, west of the Timmins Airport, is not under control at 2.0 hectares. A waterbomber has completed air attack on the fire and it responded very well to aerial suppression efforts.
Forty FireRangers and three overhead personnel from the Northeast Region are currently in Alberta helping with the fire in Slave Lake. In total, 85 personnel from Ontario are assisting Alberta.
For Friday, weather south of the height of land will consist of cloudy skies, scattered showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm. Temperatures south of the height of land will be in the teens or low twenties. North of the height of land will see sun and cloud with temperatures in the twenties.
When cleaning up wood and grass debris, the ministry suggests composting, chipping or taking debris to a landfill site instead of burning. If you still decide to burn debris, residents are reminded that they are required to follow safe outdoor fire guidelines. In particular, there are restrictions on day burning of brush and grass. Fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset, be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving.
If you live within a municipality, contact your local municipal office or fire department BEFORE burning.
