New OPP Facility In Nipigon Creating Construction Jobs

McGuinty Government Supporting Safer Communities In Northwestern Ontario

“I am very pleased that the construction of a new OPP detachment will generate local jobs and support business activity in Nipigon, while at the same time giving the OPP a better facility to keep our community safe.” Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North

Construction is now underway on a new Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment that will enhance community safety in Nipigon and create construction jobs. At the peak of construction, it is estimated that 50 tradespeople and labourers will be at work daily.

The new facility will replace the existing detachment and provide the OPP with a larger, more efficient facility that will help them protect local families and keep the community safe. The building will include:

  • Approximately 14,700 square feet of space
  • Evidence vaults with a processing area
  • A secure area with a fingerprint room and seven holding cells
  • Multi-purpose boardroom with public access for community meetings
  • Modern building infrastructure to meet technology requirements
  • A secure compound to accommodate seized vehicles.

The modern building is part of the McGuinty Government’s commitment to replace or upgrade OPP facilities for front-line officers, helping them keep Ontario’s communities safer. Updating Ontario’s community safety infrastructure, roads, highways, transit, hospitals and schools is part of the government’s plan to create jobs, grow local economies and ensure the province remains strong and competitive for years to come.

“The McGuinty government is committed to building new, efficient OPP facilities across the province to enhance community safety and protect families across the province.” Jim Bradley, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services
