MPS Takes Care of Risky Business
Manitouwadge Public School News
MANITOUWADGE, ON – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit Public Health Nurse Shirley Saasto- Stopyra accompanied by Reene Warren the Health Promotion Community Resource Person conducted a peer lead training program for students at MPS recently. This workshop was developed in response to concerns expressed by teachers & students in regards to bullying & risky behaviours by senior elementary students.
All activities developed were based on input from Grade 8 students, teachers, a guidance counsellor & The Children’s Centre in Thunder Bay. This workshop helped students identify & discuss areas in their lives where they take risks that put themselves & others in harm’s way. Ten students from grades 6-8 at the MPS were chosen & received the training consisting of two and a half hours in the morning in which they were given tools they need to make good decisions while understanding the consequences of their decisions. The workshop touched on topics such as bullying, cyber-bullying, risk taking, self protection (safety gear) & resiliency (self- esteem). During their training they were treated to a nutritious snack supplied by the Health Unit. In the afternoon these peer leaders then lead their peers through the workshop as they rotated through the 6 interactive stations geared to the above topics.
Feedback from students indicated that they enjoyed the day. We know that this workshop will further enhance the education they have already received on these vital topics.
