MARATHON, ON- The Ontario Provincial Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) are warning the public about a “tax refund scam” that is becoming more prevalent across Canada.
Crooks target their victims by e-mail or phone, posing as “Canada Revenue Agency” claiming that your tax refund that was filed was miscalculated and that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of more money. To receive the refund they ask you to click on a link that requests your banking information. The E-mail letter that is sent looks very legal but is indeed a fraud.
Anyone contacted in such a way is reminded not to give out their banking information over the internet or phone without first confirming the information by calling Revenue Canada directly. If fraud is suspected, contact the CAFC at 1-888-495-8501 or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
