Pancake Breakfast at St. Hillary’s
RED ROCK, ON – Tuesday, March 8th, grade 3/4 students at St. Hilary’s Separate school in Red Rock, enjoyed a traditional Pancake Breakfast in celebration of Shrove Tuesday and the beginning of Lent. Students learned that Shrove Tuesday is when people used up certain ingredients such as butter, eggs and syrup that would not typically be eaten during an individual’s fasting, during the Lenten season. It was discussed, that the Lenten season lasts for forty days and that the number forty is a number that appears in the Bible frequently. It is also understood that this is an adequate time to reflect on one’s life and to change one’s self for the better.
Together with their discussion of Shrove Tuesday and the receiving of ashes on Ash Wednesday, students were reminded that Lent is not a time to complain about what they are missing out on. It is a time where they can reflect on their actions and do things for others. They learned that ‘Acts of Service’ to one another are also significant during this time, and that Lent is not solely about giving up treats or specific activities.
To further their learning and journey in the Catholic faith, as a class, students brainstormed ways they can be closer to Jesus during Lent. Students then organized their ideas into a culminating writing assignment where they were able to display and reflect on their ideas on how they can bring themselves closer to Jesus during the Lenten season.
