NDP Canvass Northwestern Limits of Riding
With only weeks remaining in the federal election campaign, candidate visibility is increasingly important to those seeking election. The ability to be accessible to constituents, to answer their questions and respond to their concerns, is very important for all candidates, but the sheer geographical size of Northern Ontario ridings [Ridings which emcompass Northshore communities – the Northwestern riding of Thunder Bay-Superior North (NDP Incumbent MP Bruce Hyer; Liberal candidate Yves Frioct; PC candidate Richard Harvey; Green Party candidate Scot Kyle) which begins at Pic River First Nation travelling west towards Marathon and including Greenstone or the Northeastern riding of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing (NDP incumbent MP Carol Hughes; Liberal candidate Francois Cloutier; Conservative candidate Ray Sturgeon; Green Party candidate Lorraine Rekmans) which begins at Manitouwadge travelling East towards Pic Mobert First Nation and including Hornepayne] challenge candidates in a unique way as they are expected to create schedules for themselves and their campaign team members which leave no community unvisited.
The ability, or failure, by a candidate and his/her team, to travel to a community and meet with constituents is a good measure, of how they might serve a community if elected; of their competency to serve such a large riding and sends a clear message in regards to how they may, or may not, prioritize small and/or isolated Northern Ontario communities. And though communities like Dubreuilville, White River, Pic Mobert, Schreiber, Rossport, Red Rock, Pays Plat, Lake Helen, Longlac, Caramat or Beardmore may have residents counted in the hundreds or only a few thousand, each – together – ads up to the votes, that can win or loose an election.
MANITOUWADGE, ON –The Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing incumbent, NDP MP Carol Hughes, appears to be a candidate who feels it is important to continue having a strong presence in Northshore communities. Michael Mantha, member of Hughes campaign team, spent the day canvassing in Manitouwadge Tuesday (April 19th) in spite of weather that had the community nearly snow’d-in.OntarioNewsNorth.com Editor Karina Hunter, spoke with Mantha as he wrapped up his Manitouwadge visit, late Tuesday evening, to hear how his day had unfolded, what concerns he had heard voiced by Manitouwadge residents and people’s response to the work Hughes has been doing as MP of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing…
