McGuinty Government Celebrates Achievements In Amateur Sport
The event, hosted by the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport and the Sport Alliance of Ontario also recognized the outstanding contributions of officials, volunteers and corporate supporters of amateur sport in Ontario.
Of the 57 honourees recognized for sport excellence, four athletes received top honours:
- Cody Sorensen, Male Athlete of the Year, Bobsleigh
- Heather Moyse, Female Athlete of the Year, Bobsleigh
- Richard Ball, Male Athlete with a Disability of the Year, Athletics
- Summer Mortimer, Female Athlete with a Disability of the Year, Swimming
Amongst this year’s winners are several of the 23 Ontario athletes who brought home medals at the Vancouver Olympics, and many of the 53 athletes competing for Canada at the Winter Paralympics.
Ontario’s athletes and coaches will have an opportunity to showcase their skills at home when the GTA hosts the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. The Games will create thousands of construction jobs, improve sports infrastructure, and bring 250,000 athletes, coaches and tourists to Ontario.

- Thirteen Vancouver 2010 medalists received support through Quest for Gold which provides direct support to athletes,as well as enhanced coaching and competition opportunities.
- In February at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, Team Ontario captured the Canada Games flag for the 9th time in 12 Games.
- Since 1965, the Ontario Sport Awards have been honouring outstanding achievement in Ontario amateur sport. It is the highest recognition for sport excellence in the province.
- Previous recipients include Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, Eric Lamaze, Patrick Chan, Donovan Bailey, Silken Laumann and Lennox Lewis.
- Award winners are chosen by the Sport Awards Selection Committee, a group of former athletes and sport administrators from Ontario.
