2010 Birders gather before boarding the buses

DORION, ON – Once again, the organizers of the Festival are getting very excited about the arrival of the annual event on May 28th and 29th, 2011 as  Dorion will be the home for a number of birders…novice and expert alike.  With Hurkett Cove Conservation area being a renowned birding site in Ontario, it’s the perfect location.

This years’ Festival has already promises to be bigger and better.  Expert guides from the area will lead the birders and educate as they go.  We are welcoming back Brian Ratcliff, Al Harris, Dr Nick Escott, George Holborn, and welcoming Greg Stroud, Brian Moore and Brian McLaren.

The Festival in 2010 was a fantastic success with a tally of 97 species sighted, and with the addition of our website, we have been able to reach interested birders across the country and in the United States.  We were very pleased to welcome our first American birder in 2010, and hope he returns with friends in tow this year!

Day One is a busy day.  Registrants (pre-payment is required) will arrive at the Dorion Community Centre at 8 am and after receiving a gift bag, will enjoy a delicious homemade breakfast.  Buses will then take the divided groups to either Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park or Hurkett Cove.  Lunches will be delivered at noon and birders will switch locations to continue birding for the remainder of the afternoon.  Upon returning to the Centre, a slide show, attendance prizes and silent auction will keep the attendees busy and a delicious buffet supper will be served, followed by a presentation by Brian Ratcliff.

Day Two will begin at St. Mary’s Anglican Church (meeting room) for a light breakfast and a brief introduction.  Birders will then carpool to The Nipigon Recreation Trail for a morning of birding…once again, accompanied by their expert guides.  A lunch will be served back at the church and bird sightings reviewed, followed by more attendance prizes.

The fee for both days is $125, or $85 for Day One, and $40 for Day Two.
