Sault Symphony Out In Space?
The Sault Symphony Orchestra Takes Off on a Space Odyssey April 9
Sault Ste. Marie, ON — The Sault Symphony Orchestra has assembled its largest orchestra in history for its upcoming season closer, ‘The Planets’. On April 9, audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy this unique concert experience as they embark on a multimedia space odyssey.
The Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre will transform on a ‘Voyage of Discovery’. A giant screen will fill the stage as more than 60 musicians, conducted by Dr. John Wilkinson, fill the orchestra. Presented on-screen will be a high-definition feature of awe-inspiring images, historical illustrations, animated projections, and an interactive journey set to the incredible music of Gustav Holst.
‘The Planets’ is a seven-movement orchestral suite, where each movement is named after a planet in our solar system. Written in 1914, ‘The Planets’ has been widely performed and enduringly popular, where each movement is intended to convey ideas and emotions associated with the astrological influence of the planets.
This concert event also boasts some guest appearances including The Chamber Singers of Algoma who join the Symphony as they perform ‘Neptune’, interactive computer games where the young and young at heart can test their knowledge of space, and a very special message that will challenge everyone.
The guided ‘Voyage of Discovery’ film journey combines historical information about Gustav Holst and his mystical view of the planets. Each introduction in the film, guided by Dr. Norm Thagard, mixes mystical, magical and scientific information in documentary format to help prepare the audience for their musical and visual journey of our solar system.
This event is one that all ages can get out and enjoy as the young delight in the images and learning about space, and the young at heart can transcend time and space through the power of the visual and auditory presentations.
