Gravelle & Mauro announce additional support for local communities

Ontario is helping a number of communities in Northwestern Ontario fund local priorities, including social programs that assist its most vulnerable residents, through the Ontario Municipality Partnership Fund (OMPF). The additional funds come via 2009 OMPF as a result of finalized costs – where social programs and policing were higher than originally estimated.

Northwestern Ontario communities receiving the additional funding include:

The City of Thunder Bay ($645,700)
Kenora ($696,700)
Sioux Lookout ($108,400)
Township of Shuniah ($97,500)
Town of Marathon ($82,900)
Municipality of Neebing ($33,500)

Ten other communities will also receive 2009 OMPF funding in various amounts up to $24,500.

This program is designed to help municipalities respond to their unique local priorities by providing funds transparently and without conditions attached. It helps municipalities deliver social programs, and policing services as well as address the unique challenges faced in northern and rural areas.

Working together with municipalities is part of the Open Ontario plan to improve public services, support new opportunities for economic growth and job creation, and improve the quality of life for all Ontario families.

QUICK FACTS

In 2011, through the combined benefit of the OMPF and provincial uploads of social assistance program costs, municipalities are receiving more than double the support they received in 2003.
By 2018, the province will have increased ongoing support to municipalities to $4 billion, an increase of more than 270 per cent since 2003.
Since 2005, Ontario has provided municipalities with unconditional transfer payments under the OMPF program, which are both transparent and equitable.
