NIPIGON OPP RECOVER STOLEN VEHICLES

3 Suspects Arrested and Charged

GRAVEL RIVER, ON –On February 1, 2011 officers from the Nipigon detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), received a report of theft of gas from the Gravel River Resort.  The suspects were last seen heading west towards Nipigon.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. an OPP officer located the vehicle on Highway 17 just east of Nipigon.  The officer activated lights and sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle which fled police.  The suspect apprehension pursuit was discontinued after a short distance for public safety reasons due to suspect’s high rate of speed and the fact that it was approaching the town of Nipigon. 

Shortly after, police located the vehicle abandoned in the Town of Nipigon.  A check revealed that it had been reported stolen from Quebec.  As a result of continuing their search, officers soon arrested a suspect nearby.  Further investigation resulted in two other suspects being arrested.  These suspects had broken into a Camp in the Nipigon Bay area and stole some winter clothing and a snow machine. 

All three males were held in custody pending a bail hearing in Nipigon on February 2, 2011.

A 26 year old male from Gaspe, Quebec is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Theft Under $5000 and Break and Enter. 

A 27 year old male from New Carlisle, Quebec is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000, Theft Under $5000, Break and Enter and Breach of Probation. 

A 36 year old male from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Theft Under $5000, Flight from Police and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The investigation is continuing and the OPP will be able to release the names of the accused once the charges have been brought before court.
