Enjoying Our Natural Treasures – Hawks Ridge Trail

Photos and video by Photographer Doug Gibbons

MARATHON, ON – Recently, Photographer Doub Gibbons and his wife Liz were adventuring via snowshoes on the outskirts of Marathon on Hawks’ Ridge Trail. Luckily for OntarioNewsNorth.com readers, Gibbons’ cameras are always close at hand; he captured the beauty of  the 2km intermediate level trail, which climbs to a vertical height of 350 feet, and shares it here with us.

Hawks Ridge is accessible from the end of Hemlo Drive in Marathon, formed more than 10,000 years ago after the last glacier movement. The ridge acquired its name from the frequent sightings of hawks using the winds off Lake Superior to soar along the ridge.  “This time of year the trail is amazing and refreshing to enjoy” said Gibbons, adding that “We are very fortunate to have this trail so close to home”.
