Changes at Dubreuilville’s Fish Derby
DUBREUILVILLE, ON – Dubreuilville Father’s Day Walleye Derby, one of Northern Ontario’s biggest annual fish derbies is preparing to make 2011 the most exciting yet, and derby President, Chantal Mantha believes Mother Nature may just help out as well.
The DFDWD Executive met recently and decided to go forward with past discussions to try and keep rules more similar to other area fish derbies, as much as is possible “We would like that the [fish] Derbies in the North be alike so participants know what to expect from one derby to another.” said Mantha, explaining that the executive had discussed and voted on changing weigh-in limits. Last year the DFDWD had allowed 4 walleyes per day for a total of 8 per weekend, this year however they are raising the weigh-in limit to 6 walleyes per day for a total of 12 per weekend. “This adds more action at the weigh-in scale and for the participants.” said Mantha, she was confident that the added fish at weigh-in would not pose any special challenges to the Dubreuilville volunteers who have plenty of experience “With more action this year, I’m confident that our committee along with our volunteers, we can handle anything. We always leave room for improvement because nothing is perfect.”
Water levels on the Magpie Reservoir have been rising, a ‘wonderful sign’ says Mantha who was dissapointed last year when some anglers chose not to participate due to low water levels in the Magpie River; the water did not prevent many others from taking their piece of the more than $12,000 in prizes which were distributed at the 2010 derby however. Mantha is hoping that the rising levels will continue to attract new and returning anglers to compete again this year Mantha closed adding that “Hopefully Mother Nature will work her charm on us”.
