Cultural Centre Committee

The Terrace Bay Cultural Centre project began as an idea by members of the community’s Superior Seniors Club for a multi-use facility to feature a senior’s activity centre.  St. Martins Catholic School and Ecole Catholique Franco Terrace were moving to a new building in the Township and rather than have the building demolished or left vacant, the Superior North Catholic District School Board allowed the Municipality to purchase it in early 2008.  The project grew into the Cultural Centre concept as a means to further develop the Seniors Activity Centre, enhance and provide additional space to the Terrace Bay Public Library, and to develop a community hall which was lacking in the Municipality.  Project funding was provided by the Federal and Provincial governments through the Building Canada Fund, as well as the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the Ontario Trillium Fund Corporation, and the Township of Terrace Bay.  Kuch Stephenson Gibson Malo Architects and Engineers developed the plans for the redesign of the building and Man-Shield Construction were the successful bidders as general contractor for the project.  The Terrace Bay Cultural Centre began construction on January 4, 2010 and the building opened to the public on October 4, 2010.  The total cost of the project was $1.9 million and the Michael King Hall has already hosted 6 large events and the building is used regularly by patrons to the library and members of the Superior Seniors Club.  For more information, visit www.terracebay.ca/cc.
