Highway 17 Drivers Use Caution
NIPIGON, ON – Drivers of Highway 17, along the Northshore, should use caution this winter, remembering to adjust speeds as weather conditions dictate. Whenever possible postpone highway driving if conditions are poor and always check weather forecasts & OntarioNewsNorth.com for highway conditions or closures prior to heading out. Just this past week a number of collisions and accidents occured on Highway 17 in our region including:
- Thursday night (Dec.9), just before midnight, Thunder Bay OPP advised that Highway 17 wad closed, at Raith, because 2 tractor trailer units had hit head on causing the highway to be completely blocked; a third tractor trailer unit had then struck the two other tractor trailer units. This accident caused Road closure between Highway 11/17 at Shabaqua and Highway 17 at Ignace.
- Friday morning (Dec.10), Nipigon OPP released a road closure warning when Highway 17, at the top of Jackfish Hill just west of Steele River, was closed, due to a transport truck that had caught on fire and become totally engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported in the original release though the highway had remained closed pending the destroyed vehicle’s removal.
