RED ROCK, ON – Tuesday, November 9th, Grade 3 and 4 students from St. Hilary School held a Remembrance Day Prayer Service for their school community. Those in attendance included the Superior North Catholic District School Board Trustee Shirley Dunville and School Council Chairperson Terry Nichols.
Students shared an opening prayer for world peace and presented a short dramatic skit called, ‘Mark’s First Poppy. ’ Mark, played by Joel, learned the significance of remembering past wars and the symbolism of the red poppy, from his war veteran grandfather, played by Thomas. Students also recited the poem, ‘In Flanders Fields,’ written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae more than 90 years ago. Also shared was a music video by Terry Penney, called Normandy in Newfoundland, that illustrated the sacrifices of countless affected by war and the memories that they carry for the rest of their lives.
The Prayer Service was concluded with a blessing from Deacon Leo Marchand and students were invited to leave the gymnasium in quiet reflection.
