Proposed Schreiber Wind Farm Update
SCHREIBER, ON – Schreiberites may have heard a helicopter over head yesterday and wondered what the activity was all about… These noisess will continue through the day today as a 50 m (164 ft) high, temporary, meteorological assessment tower (MET) tower, made of tubular steel tower, 50 m (164 feet) is installed. The wind monitoring tower, which will remain in place for approximately two years, does not have a turbine but rather an array of instruments and devices are being mounted on it to measure and record wind data at the site, continuing to determine the feasibility of a Schreiber Wind Farm. This installation is just one of many important activities which must be completed prior to construction of any utility scale wind power generation project.
Beginning in 2008, Anemos Energy entered into Agreements with applicable landowners to secure wind project development rights in an area south of Schreiber, between Schreiber Beach and Worthington Bay, which includes Mount Gwynne. The project proposal was publicly introduced during a Town Council meeting which took place in December 2008.
In preparation for this week’s work, a met tower installation contractor was engaged. The installation contractor visited the site this summer to investigate logistics issues and select a suitable location for the met tower.
Permits were applied for and received from the Town of Schreiber, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, NavCanada, and Transport Canada. The met tower equipment was ordered from the supplier and the selected installation location was prepared.
A circle of 80 m (260 feet) in diameter, around where the tower would stand, was cleared of trees and brush by an individual contracted locally. A significant part of the tower installation location was exposed bedrock facilitating the required clearing.
Additional activities still to follow include environmental studies, municipal permitting and further public consultation. Sharing information with and receiving feedback from the community will be a primary goal throughout the development process.
