OPP Remind Motorist to Adjust Driving Habits According to Road Conditions
Motorists are reminded to reduce speeds and take extra precautions as they travel along highways especially during the winter months. Snow flurries reduce visibility and will increase the distance a vehicle requires to stop. Keeping a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you is important as highways do become slippery in the winter months.
Should you be travelling on local roadways, here are a few simply steps you can take to prepare for winter driving.
- Ensure driver and all passengers are buckled up for safety
- Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained and mechanically fit
- Fill your fuel tank and windshield wiper fluid
- Ensuring the fuel level does not drop below the halfway mark is recommended
- Consider winter tires as they improve driving safety by providing better traction, braking and handling during frost, snow, slush, and particularly under icy conditions. Installing four winter tires provides greater control and stability
Finally, consider a winter driving survival kit for your vehicle. Items may include ice scraper and snowbrush, shovel, sand or other traction aid, tow rope or chain, booster cables, gas line antifreeze, flashlight, blanket and matches with a candle. There are many other items listed on the Ministry of Transportation website for motorist to review.
Winter has arrived and motorists are reminded to take extra precautions to ensure everyone arrives at their destinations safely.
