ICY ROADS CAUSE COLLISIONS

RED LAKE, ON – The icy road conditions have sent two people to hospital with minor injuries and caused fender benders in the Red Lake area.
Sunday November 21st, 2010 a car fishtailed on Highway 125 near Goldcorp’s Shaft #3 Road and was struck by an oncoming pickup truck. Both vehicles were severely damaged and two occupants were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Friday November 19th, on two separate occasions in parking lots, vehicles slid into parked vehicles, due to the slippery conditions. On the same day, there was a collision caused at the intersection of Nungessor Rd and Highway 125, where a truck slid into the back end of another truck as it was attempting to stop. As well, at the intersection of Dickenson Road and Highway 125, there was another collision involving two vehicles, caused by icy road conditions.
The O.P.P. would like to remind motorists to drive with caution during the winter season. Drive according to weather and road conditions and leave plenty of room between cars at intersections and on the highway.
PROJECT SAFETY LANE
November 15th and 16th, the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation Ontario conducted a joint enforcement project. “Project Safety Lane” was launched to target the unsafe vehicles that use our roadways. It was held at the MTO Patrol Garage at the intersection of Highways 105 and 125 in Red Lake. MTO officers, MTO mechanics and OPP officers were on site checking Personal Vehicles and Commercial Motor Vehicles for compliance with safety standards. A total of 20 vehicles were inspected and 11 license plates were seized over the two day project.
Monday the 15th, between the OPP and the MTO, six charges were laid including No annual inspection, Drive commercial motor vehicle with a major defect in it, Drive motor vehicle with no current validated permit, and Failing to ensure performance standards are met.
Tuesday November 16th, nine vehicles were inspected and subsequently five charges were laid including; Drive motor vehicle with no current validated permit, Drive motor vehicle with no licence, No annual inspection, Improper licence for class of vehicle driven and Failing to comply with condition of permit.
It was an extremely successful project, taking into account how many charges were laid, as well as numerous other warnings issued to the drivers and owners of the vehicles. The OPP and the MTO want to ensure that the roadways are safe for everyone using them.
