SCHREIBER, ON – Friday November 5th students, staff, and parents of Holy Angels School gathered together for prayer and reflection on past and present day warfare, and the soldiers that have sacrificed their own safety for our freedom. A special song called “Pittance of Time,” by the artist Terry Kelly was played during the assembly and reminded us that we need to take time out of our busy lives to pay respect to those that serve our country, especially on Remembrance Day. We hope that the bravery and sacrifices made by our troops will not be forgotten and the peace we enjoy in our country will be enjoyed by all nations.
Students at Holy Angels School also had the special privilege of listening to the stories and experiences of local World War II Veteran Edgar LeBlanc. Mr. LeBlanc shared his personal experiences and photographs of his service with the Canadian Navy as a Gunman on several Canadian destroyers during the World War II. The students were fascinated by the first hand account of details and living conditions while working on a real battleship. After Mr. Leblanc’s presentation the students asked questions such as, “Were you ever scared?” in which he honestly admitted to shaking with fear every time he went into battle. Mr. Leblanc also shared a traumatic experience he had onboard a Canadian destroyer when it collided with another ship off the shores of Halifax, resulting in him being seriously injured and fellow ship mates being killed. The students learned that even after the wars and battles are done, those soldiers and military personnel fortunate to return home to their families are often left with more than just physical scars; they live also with nightmares and psychological scars from the negative things they endured while at war.
The students and staff of Holy Angels School wish to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Leblanc and all the veterans who have served, and those who continue to serve our country to preserve our peace and freedom.
