From the Township, Coyote Updates and more
Coyote Update, Early Bird Cat/Dog Tag Sales…and more from The Township
The Township is working with the Trappers Council to address any concerns relating to the presence of coyotes here. Though their presence has existed for years in many towns/cities throughout North America, the coyote issues remain the same.
We need to educate ourselves on their presence and follow recommendations to keep our children/pets safe as stated in MNR publications. Many of the same measures apply with the Bear Wise Program recommendations for safety/waste storage etc.
Coyote sightings are to be reported to the Municipal Law Enforcement Office at 826-3227 Ext 244 or email mleo@manitouwadge.ca , NOT the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Please call 911 in any life threatening emergency. A Public Notice regarding the presence of coyotes went out to the community in an Ad Bag recently and can be accessed on our website in its entirety or from the Municipal Office. For more info on coyotes please visit www.mnr.gov.on.ca.
The Township and the MNR cannot stress enough the seriousness of any requests to STOP FEEDING WILDLIFE or leaving any food out at all for any animals, including foxes, raccoons, ravens, seagulls and feral or stray cats. We have confirmed sightings of two raccoons here.
Regarding our Land Maintenance By-Law, the recent Public Notice from November 4, 2010 concerns Municipal Owned Vacant Residential Lots only. The Township is discouraging the storage of any objects on municipal owned vacant residential lots to eliminate any accumulations on municipal owned residential lots, which is occurring. This Public Notice is an important step in public notification. To prevent any misinformation being shared or if you require clarification on any notices, please call the appropriate Township departments as suggested in Notices.
Efforts also continue for the removal of derelict vehicles in our community. If you require assistance with the removal of empty derelict vehicles, the Township is willing to remove them as soon as possible.
Many citizens have commented positively about the garbage collection and roads looking clean, not seeing birds ripping apart loose garbage or wind blowing loose garbage around, when this was common to see at one time. The Garbage By-Law 91-25 has existed since 1991, but plans have been in the works for over a year to make changes and update it to keep workers safe, community clean and meet current community needs.
It’s that time of year again when the Township of Manitouwadge starts to promote its “Early Bird” Dog/Cat Licenses between December 1, 2010 and January 4, 2011.
The Township of Manitouwadge Municipal Law Enforcement Office (MLEO) is pleased to announce, every person and/or family who purchases a 2011 dog/cat license(s) tag during the ‘Early Bird” Dog/Cat Tag Sale, will have their name entered in a draw and will have a chance to WIN! Some prizes. Keep watching for more information to follow closer to December. The revenue from dog/cat license sales do offset costs to operate Animal Services and allows the Municipality to identify our pet population which is most helpful.
Pet owners who license their pets can expect a “Free Ride Home” for their pet, should they become loose, unless the pet’s behavior has been problematic and where other fees/fines may apply.
The MLEO continues to encourage Responsible Pet Ownership and remind pet owners to comply with our local Cat/Dog By-laws and to spay/neuter your pet. Copies of any By-laws can also be requested at Reception in the Municipal Office or found at www.manitouwadge.ca.
Efforts are ongoing to live trap feral cats in our community. Please call the MLEO should you see dogs or stray/feral cats at large, especially before it gets too cold. We picked up three litters of feral kittens with the help of animal loving citizens, thus discontinuing the breeding of additional litters. The Municipal Pound was fortunate to have one family adopt two feral kittens and they are adjusting to their new family and home. A few other families adopted cats as well. We still have three very friendly domestic adult cats (two are believed to be altered), and two socialized feral kittens available for adoption and need homes soon. Our feline friends have enjoyed the blankets/food brought to the Municipal Pound by caring citizens also.
In closing…yes, winter is here and a reminder that winter parking is now in effect. Vehicles are to be off the roadways between 2 am and 6am
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our goals in keeping Manitouwadge a safe and clean Community to live in. If you have any questions regarding any By-Law related matters, please do not hesitate to call Cherie Gray/MLEO @ 826-3227 Ext 244 or email at mleo@manitouwadge.ca.
