McGuinty Government’s New Tax Credit To Benefit More Than A Million Families
From music and painting to sports and dance, Ontario families will now be able to get a tax credit for enrolling their children in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
With the new, permanent Children’s Activity Tax Credit, parents will now be able to receive a refundable tax credit of up to $50 per child under the age of 16 and up to $100 per child with a disability under the age of 18 for enrolling their children in activities that encourage them to be healthy and active.
The Children’s Activity Tax Credit is the only such tax credit in Canada that covers a wide range of children’s activities. In addition, it is fully refundable, meaning that all Ontario families can benefit.
As part of the Open Ontario Plan, the government is providing targeted tax relief measures to help Ontario families. In addition to the Children’s Activity Tax Credit, Ontarians could benefit from the Northern Ontario Energy Credit and the proposed new Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit.
QUICK FACTS
- Eligible expenses incurred on or after January 1, 2010 will qualify for the tax credit.
- The Children’s Activity Tax Credit will provide about $75 million to about 1.1 million Ontario families each year, benefiting 1.8 million children.
