Gravelle announces $28,500 for area school-based projects
INCREASING PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN NORTHWESTERN ONTARIO
Parent groups in Northwestern Ontario are playing a more active role in their children’s education and development through special projects supported by Ontario’s Parent Reaching Out (PRO) grants. PRO grants support school-based and regional projects that help identify barriers to parent engagement in communities, and find local solutions to help parents get more involved.
Locally, this year’s allocations will see 34 school-based parent organizations, school councils and parent involvement committees in Northwestern Ontario share $28,500 to address local barriers such as language or poverty, and develop local solutions to help other parents get involved in their children’s education, both at home and at school.
Helping students reach their full potential is an important part of the Open Ontario Plan. When parents and students are engaged in learning — even under difficult circumstances – they are more likely to perform well in school, graduate and go on to postsecondary education.
- The 2010-11 PRO grants will help support 20 projects in Thunder Bay-Superior North, and 14 projects in Thunder Bay-Atikokan
- Since 2006, the government has supported over 7,200 PRO grants
- Ontario’s new parent engagement policy helps parents work together with education partners so that they can contribute to the success of Ontario’s students and education system
- All school boards in Ontario are required to have a Parent Involvement Committee by January 31, 2011
