AVOID BEING A VICTIM OF AUTO THEFT

NIPIGON, ON –On September 18, 2010 while Schreiber Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were investigating a reported incident, an officer was involved in a confrontation with an intoxicated male. The 26 year old male of Schreiber, Ontario was taken into custody and charged with Being Intoxicated in a Public Place contrary to the Liquor License Act. The male was further charged with Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest contrary to the Criminal Code and is to appear in Schreiber Court on November 24, 2010 to answer to this charge.

Schreiber OPP continue to investigate the theft of two motor vehicles from the Schreiber area. On September 18, 2010 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Schreiber OPP were advised of a vehicle that was removed from a parking lot in Schreiber. The vehicle was recovered by the owner on Winnipeg Street in Schreiber a short time after he noticed it missing. At 6:50 a.m. on September 19, 2010 a second motor vehicle was reported stolen from the Schreiber area. The vehicle was removed from the side of the road in front of the owner’s residence sometime during the night.

OPP want to remind citizens that they can take an active role in helping to protect them selves from being the victim of auto theft. Make yourself a harder target for criminals using the following strategy:

always roll up your vehicle windows, lock the doors, and pocket the key
never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running, even for a minute
double lock your vehicle, if you have a garage, use it
keep your vehicle documents including registration and insurance with you, not in the vehicle
park your vehicle in a well lit area and never leave valuables in plain view

Car thieves do not like witnesses, so don’t make it easy for them. The longer it takes a thief to get into your car the more likely they are to get caught. Remember, lock it or lose it.
