Romeo & Juliet Takes the Stage Next Weekend!
Dueling swordfights, star-crossed lovers, stunning direction, delicate music, compelling actors and laughter make for a great combination on a hot summer night and that’s exactly where you should be on the evening of August 21 in Manitouwadge.
Nite on the Town Entertainment Series (NOTES)of the Arts will host six actors from the Salamander Shakespeare Theatre Company, and their accomplished stage manager, on their first ‘True North Tour’ performing Romeo & Juliet.
William Somers is Romeo. Anna Lewis is Juliet. In the tradition of touring companies since Shakespeare’s time, Artem Barry plays the Prince, Mercutio, and Paris. Garrett Quick plays Tybalt, Friar Lawrence and the Nurse. Rosalind Crump plays Benvolio and Lady Capulet and Patrick Blenkarn plays Capulet, Friar John and the Apothecary.
The show is directed by Eleanor Crowder, with staging by Chris MacLeod, Artistic Director of Salamander Theatre, and the musical direction by Rachel Eugster. Salamander Shakespeare Theatre Company has just finished touring throughout the month of July in the Ottawa area before performing shows at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage.
The troupe’s first ever TRUE NORTH tour takes them to North Bay, Sudbury, Elliot Lake, Wikwemikong, Manitouwadge, Atikokan, Devlin, Kenora, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Dryden, and Thunder Bay.
Through a generous touring grant through the Ontario Arts Council – Youth Training Program of Theatre Ontario, NOTES has also arranged for the troupe to conduct an acting workshops for the general public. “Creating Character” is designed for young actors as it is an entry level workshop which will be held at the High School from 10am – 1pm. Romeo & Juliet will be showcased in the Auditorium at Manitouwadge Highschool, a 260+ angled seat venue, complete with impressive acoustics, lighting and air conditioning, it is the perfect location for hosting any performance, though particularly suited for live performance theatre such as this.
Showtime for Romeo & Juliet is 7pm, tickets are available at The Echo in Manitouwadge and at the door. Adults are $10 and Youth/Seniors $5.
