Region to Benefit from New Emergency Services Centre

McGuinty Government Helps Bring New Response And Training Facilities To City

August 20, 2010

A new fire and emergency services facility and regional training centre in Kenora will bring new jobs, enhance protection and improve services locally, while expanding training opportunities across the region.

The new building, located close to the Highway 17 bypass and away from its previously congested midtown location, will contain the city’s fire services and emergency response communications centre. The 1,700-square metre facility will also include two classrooms capable of accommodating more than 60 students at any given time. The larger, more functional and better equipped space will provide additional opportunities for cost effective postsecondary education and emergency services training for Kenora area communities, First Nations and their volunteer fire departments.

The project, supported by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), is part of the Open Ontario plan to create jobs and opportunities in Northern Ontario.

QUICK FACTS

• The NOHFC is providing $1 million to this project through its Infrastructure and Community Development Program.

• Construction began in the fall of 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by the fall. Four new jobs are expected to be created from this project.

• The centre is also designed to host emergency management functions for large scale emergencies and disasters that may occur in adjacent municipalities and First Nation communities across Northwestern Ontario.
