The North Shore Singers is a non-profit community choir of approximately 30 – 45 voices from Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Rossport, Pays Plat who perform across the Northshore. The Choir was formed when conductor and artistic director, Gerry Price, and accompanist and executive director, Betty Hanley, had a dream of what could be and issued a call for singers. The rest, as they say, is history: the response of singers and audiences has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic.

The North Shore Singers continues to promote a high standard of excellence in the preparation and performance of choral music. The choir has performed in Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Marathon, and Manitouwadge, and was selected by the Torch Relay Committee to sing the Olympic Torch song at the official ceremony in Marathon last January.

While preparing for its 2009 Christmas concert, Spirit of the Season, the NSS received a confirmation that the grant application to the Trillium Foundation prepared by choir member, Doug Roberts, on behalf of the choir had been successful and that the group would be able to purchase their own sound system and equipment rather than constantly borrowing mix-and-match items from Gerry Price or Sandy Stewart, Thunder Bay.

The months after Christmas involved diligent research and price comparisons in the procurement of the equipment that audiences subsequently saw and heard in action at the 2010 spring concert, Strollin’ Down Broadway. Today the NSS is the proud owner of a keyboard, a complete sound reinforcement system, and a super Apple computer with Digital Performer and PrintMusic. Local artist, Jean Marc Kenny, has beautifully airbrushed the NSS logo on the new speakers. We are most grateful to the Trillium Foundation for its support.

The NSS is now looking ahead to a fourth successful season in 2010/11. Membership in the North Shore Singers is open to anyone who wants to sing and enjoys learning music. Watch for rehearsal announcements on www.OntarioNewsNorth.com call or contact Betty Hanley (825-9048) for more information.
