World Junior Baseball Quarter-Final Match-ups Announced

Thunder Bay, ON – Organizers of the 2010 IBAF World Junior Baseball Championship now underway in Thunder Bay have announced the quarter final match-ups for tomorrow, Friday, July 30.

Team Canada, 4-1, in first place following Pool B round robin competition, will take on Team Italy, 2-3, who finished in fourth place in Pool A.  The game is set for Friday, July 30, 2010, at 7:00 pm at Port Arthur Stadium.

“The fan support here in Thunder Bay has been outstanding and the crowd really got behind us tonight,” said Team Canada Manager Greg Hamilton following an 8-7 win over the Czech Republic Wednesday night.  “The boys absolutely love playing at Port Arthur Stadium and we hope the crowd continues to support us Friday night against Italy.”

Hamilton added:  “We’re comfortable with our pitching and if we can swing the bats the way we have been, we’ll hopefully be hanging around for awhile.”

Team member Dalton Pompey said:  “We’ve played well so far. We faced some adversity and were able to fight through it. Hopefully that can continue in the playoff round.”

In addition to this game, the complete schedule for Friday July 30, 2010 is as follows:

Game #31 – Panama vs. France, 9:00 am at Baseball Central

Game #32 – Venezuela vs. Czech Republic, 9:30 am at Port Arthur Stadium

Quarter Finals:

Game #33 – Chinese Taipei (2A) vs. Netherlands (3B), 12:30 pm at Baseball Central

Game #34 – USA (1A) vs. Cuba (4B). 2:00 pm at Port Arthur Stadium

Game #35 – South Korea (2B) vs. Australia (3A), 4:30 pm at Baseball Central.

Due to a greater-than-anticipated demand for tickets, organizers have incorporated additional bleachers into Port Arthur Stadium, enabling them to sell 3000 more general admission tickets to each game.

Thunder Bay International Baseball Association President Larry Hebert said that the strong public support that the event has enjoyed warranted bringing in more bleachers.

“This is a great opportunity for everyone from local residents to our many out-of-town visitors to see some outstanding baseball”, he said.

“We wanted to make sure that we opened up that opportunity to as many people as possible”, he added.
