Summerfest Kicks Off

MARATHON, ON – July 2nd 2010 – What many are predicting will be the ‘Northshore’s biggest party of 2010″ began today with a parade from the Curling Club ending in the parking lot of the Superior Place Mall. More than 40 boats participated in the parade, a gentle reminder to the Township of Marathon and it’s residents, of how desperately the community needs a Marina.

Following the parade, opening ceremonies were held in the Community Arena. MC for the evening, Iian MacIlway, introduced; Rick Dumas, Mayor of Marathon,; Roger Souckey, Barrick Hemlo Operations; Jeanie Allerton, President Marathon & District Chamber of Commerce; Alden Luce, Northshore Métis Nations; each took the opportunity to thank the Summerfest Committee for their diligence and hard work in preparing the 10 day event.  Finally, Andre Paris, Summerfest Chair was invited to say a few words, Paris had a long list of thank yous to cover before encouraging everyone to pick up a free Summerfest Schedule ensuring there was something for all tastes to enjoy.

The Captain’s Meeting was held for all those in attendance because of the Fish Derby to debrief them on the weekend’s rules and regulations before prizes were drawn, by MacIlway.

Among the events planned for the week ahead are the

  • Penn Lake Family Park Day Sunday, July 4th starting at 1pm
  • High Tea at the Lakeview Manor B&B, Monday, July5th (RSVP for one of two available sittings
