Statement on Canada Day 2010
Hyer: It’s incumbent upon Canadians to appreciate what makes Canada special
THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Bruce Hyer is celebrating Canada Day in Terrace Bay and Thunder Bay, and points in between along the North Shore this year. He took the opportunity to speak about Canada’s 143rd birthday.
“This Canada Day, families and friends will gather right across the country to celebrate our magnificent nation. At times like these, it’s incumbent upon us all to appreciate what makes our country special.” said Hyer.
“While there are many challenges we face, there is also much to be thankful for. We have an incredible natural heritage which we can go out and enjoy. We live in a rich cultural mosaic, unique in the world. Most of us are fortunate enough to live in relative comfort, but we must also appreciate that 12% of Canadians still live in poverty. And despite many obstacles, our Aboriginal peoples have shown they can overcome adversity and achieve great success within Canadian society.”
Hyer did not forget to acknowledge those who have given much to building one of the most inclusive and prosperous countries in the world “We need to give thanks for those many Canadians who volunteer to help others, and to those who serve in the line of duty.” said Hyer “Without them, we wouldn’t enjoy the rights, liberties, and supporting communities we have today. Thanks is also owed to our founding pioneers, and the newcomers who continue to work to build Canada into the great country it is today.”
