Ground Breaking at Simcoe Plaza

TERRACE BAY, ON – Monday, July 12th in excess of a hundred residents and business owners gathered at the Simcoe Plaza for a historic moment, the Ground Breaking Ceremony which officially kicked off the 3 million dollar rehabilitation of Terrace Bay’s Downtown Core.
Carmelo Notarbartolo, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forests the Hon. Michael Gravelle, and Acting Mayor Gino Leblanc each took the opportunity to speak to those in attendance before Gravelle, using a golden shovel provided by the township, officially broke ground, and was joined by dignitaries in attendance to cut the ribbon which marked commencement of the project.
Notarbartolo gave thanks to community, project partners, municipal staff and council for their efforts and continued support of the project. Gravelle spoke about the importance of the project marking it as a pivotal time in Terrace Bay history, voicing his belief that it signals the community’s turnaround; “Coupled with recent news in regards to Terrace Bay Pulp Inc, completion of the McCausland Hospital Long-Term Care and Terrace Bay Cultural Centre Projects this marks a turnaround for Terrace Bay after some very difficult times; residents, businesses and their partners have worked very hard to bring the community to this point” said Gravelle congratulating those involved for their diligence and continued efforts.
Leblanc took the opportunity to speak of the next steps for the project and remind residents and visitors of the need to be patient with construction while continuing to support Terrace Bay businesses.
Construction on the Lighthouse, from which visitors will enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Superior, which is a main feature of the project began immediately afterwards, work to commence on the Plaza shortly.
The Lighthouse is scheduled to be completed mid October while improvements to Simcoe Plaza should be completed by December 31, 2010
