East Fire Region

Two new fires were confirmed on July 9. Sudbury 110 was 0.2 hectares in size and has been called out. North Bay 55, at 0.1 hectares, has also been called out. So far today, July 10, there have been three new confirmed fires. Sudbury 111, on Pine Island near Killarney, was reported at 0.1 hectares in size and has since been called out. North Bay 56 is a 0.1 hectare lightning fire northeast of Jocko Rivers Provincial Park and no problems are anticipated. North Bay 57 is also a 0.1 lightning fire near Rib Lake and there are no control problems anticipated with this fire either.
Residents are reminded that if found responsible for a forest fire, they can be charged under the Forest Fires Prevention Act and/or be liable for the costs of suppressing the fire. This cost can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Campfires should be completely extinguished before leaving and residents, such as berry pickers, who spend time in forested areas should exercise care and caution in order to prevent needless forest fires.

West Fire Region

There was one new fire reported in the Nipigon District in the early afternoon on July 10. Nipigon Fire Number 51, located about 43 kilometers south of the community of Eabametoong was reported at 2.0 hectares in size. Three FireRanger crews out of the Greenstone Fire Management Headquarters responded, along with air attack.
There are currently 13 active fires in the region, 12 of which are being monitored. Most are located in the northern portions of the Sioux Lookout and Nipigon Districts, and one is in the Red Lake District.
Nipigon District Fire Number 49 is a fire classed as under control at 2.0 hectares in size. Suppression efforts on this fire are proving successful.
There are no active fires in the Dryden, Fort Frances, Kenora and Thunder Bay Districts.
Thunderstorm activity continues across the region, bringing rain and multiple lightning strikes. The fire hazard is expected to drop to low across most of the region for July 11 as a result of rain from the storm systems. By June 12 the weather is forecast to clear and the fire hazard to rise again.
