East Fire Region

One new fire was reported on July 20. Sudbury 127, in the Skead Road area, was 0.1 hectares in size and has been called out.
Campfires are part of enjoying the outdoors, however, each year campfires cause many wildfires. To ensure your campfire doesn’t become a wildfire make sure you check for local restrictions, use a designated fire pit if one is available, keep water and a shovel nearby, never leave your fire unattended and make sure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving the site.

Residents are reminded that if found responsible for a forest fire, they can be charged under the Forest Fires Prevention Act and/or be liable for the costs of suppressing the fire. This cost can easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars.

West Fire Region

There were no new fires reported in the West Fire Region by the evening of July 21.
One new fire was reported in the Fort Frances District late in the evening of July 20. Fort Frances Fire Number 39 was a lightning-caused fire located on highway # 622, north of Atikokan. The fire was 0.1 ha in size and was originally actioned by the public. It is now out.
The number of active fires in the West Fire Region remains at 13, with five in the Nipigon District, one in the Red Lake District and seven in the Sioux Lookout District. No problems have been reported with these fires. Most are located in the north and are being monitored.
More rain is in the forecast and the fire hazard is low across the central portion of the region and moderate in the south and north. The exception is the far northern sectors of Sioux Lookout and Nipigon Districts which are recording a high hazard. The forecast is calling for this high hazard to continue in the far north through to mid-week.
