Terrace Bay Downtown Begins
The Terrace Bay Downtown Revitalization Project, 3 years in the making, is about to begin construction today on Monday June 28, 2010. The first part of the project to begin includes the construction of a 50 foot lighthouse attraction and marketing signage will be built shortly thereafter. Thunder Bay Company LTL Contracting Ltd. was awarded the contract last week and has visited the location of the work in the first site meeting. The Terrace Bay Lighthouse will be the centerpiece of the Downtown project with the goal of attracting tourists from the highway. Mayor Mike King says “The lighthouse is a way for people to immediately identify Terrace Bay with a recognizable symbol”. The lighthouse is a replica of the lighthouse at the Slate Islands which is the tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes at 224 feet above sea level. The Terrace Bay Lighthouse is situatated in the middle of the Simcoe Plaza retail sector and will allow visitors to travel up through the inside and will have a magnificent view of the Slate Islands and Lake Superior surrounded by the rest of the Municipality.
The second part of the project, renovations to the Simcoe Plaza section, has been retendered with bids received and a decision should be made soon. The goal of the project is to have all of the work completed by December 31, 2010. Funding assistance for the project has been received from the Provincial Government through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and the OMAFRA Rural Economic Development Fund, as well as the Federal Government through FedNor and the Community Adjustment Fund. The project partners include Superior North CFDC and the Aguasabon Chamber of Commerce. For more on the Terrace Bay Downtown Revitalization Project, please visit www.terracebay.ca/drp.
