McGuinty Government Growing A Knowledge-Based Economy
Some of the brightest students from India are coming to Ontario to take part in cutting-edge research internships at nine universities.
With support from the Ontario government, MITACS is providing 47 students with three-month internships working with Canada’s world-renowned researchers.
Students will work on a number of research projects, including improving 3D medical images and studying the transmission of drug resistant strains of HIV. In addition to taking part in projects, the students will also receive training and visit leading-edge companies to learn more about working in Ontario.
Through the Open Ontario plan, the province is promoting its postsecondary institutions abroad to encourage the next generation of skilled workers to study and settle in the province.

- Ontario is providing $500,000 over two years to MITACS to support this internship program with Indian students.
- In 2008-09, more than 37,000 international students were enrolled at Ontario colleges and universities, each contributing upwards of an estimated $27,000 to the Ontario economy.
- In 2009-10, 39 students participated in an exchange through the Ontario Maharashtra Goa program (20 inbound, 19 outbound).
- Seven out of every 10 new jobs created in Ontario over the next decade will require postsecondary education or training.
- Since 2003, the McGuinty government has added 120,000 college and university students.
