MNR East Fire Region Update
A Restricted Fire Zone continues to be in effect in northeastern Ontario. Residents and travellers through the region are reminded that all burning permits are suspended and all open air burning, including campfires, is prohibited. Conservation Officers are patrolling and charging violators.
Ontario’s largest fire continues to be Red Lake Fire 32 at 4417 hectares. Another fire to note is Wawa 18, currently 2300 hectares in size and located approximately 50 kilometres east of Wawa. So far this season across the province 11,642 hectares have been affected by a total of 531 fires.
Out of province resources from Alberta, British Colombia and Northwest Territories continue to be in Ontario. Requests are made through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) which coordinates requests for additional fire fighting personnel and equipment between the provinces and even internationally when the fire situation is beyond that jurisdiction’s capacity.

East Fire Region
There is a Restricted Fire Zone in place for Northeastern Ontario.
This restriction includes areas north of the French River to the James Bay coast and from the Quebec border west to the Pic River.
The Restricted Fire Zone will be in effect until further notice. All burning permits are suspended and all open air burning, including campfires, is prohibited. Within a Restricted Fire Zone, campers can still use portable gas or propane cook stoves for cooking and warmth but should exercise extreme caution. Fireworks are permitted during a Restricted Fire Zone, however, they must be discharged at least 300 metres from a forested area and all residue from the fireworks must be completely extinguished.
There were six new fires confirmed in the East Fire Region on May 31. Three fires were confirmed in the Sudbury district, two in the Sault Ste. Marie district and one in the North Bay district. In total there are 52 active fires in the East Fire Region. Environment Canada is reporting that smoke from Quebec fires over Ottawa and surrounding areas.
Wawa 18, approximately 50 kilometres east of Wawa, is listed at 2240 hectares. Hydro has been restored to the town of Chapleau and surrounding areas that were affected. Good progress is being made establishing control lines. The Incident Management Team remains on site.
An Emergency Area Order (EAO) has been implemented due to this active forest fire burning in the Wawa District.
