“Batchewana First Nation Commends the Accomplishments of 2010 Graduates”
The Batchewana Learning Centre (BLC) will be hosting their 32nd annual education celebration, recognizing Batchewana First Nation’s students graduating from Senior Kindergarten, Grade eight, Grade 12 and post secondary (College and University).
Registration starts at 5:00pm with graduation ceremonies beginning at 5:30pm in the gymnasium at the BLC. The celebration commences with a graduation procession and the evening will include traditional elements of song provided by the Anishnabe Sobriety Drum, graduate speeches, face painting, pony rides, BBQ, and scholarship presentations.
The BLC will be introducing 21 graduates from senior kindergarten, 23 graduates from grade eight, 21 graduates from grade 12, and 22 graduates from post secondary, four of whom are graduating with their Masters degrees;
- Patricia Belleau – Masters of Social Work, Wilfred Laurier University
- Norma Bolduc – Medical Doctor Program, McMaster University
- Maureen Buchanan – Masters in Science in Nursing, Queens University
- Pamela Roach – Masters in Criminal Justice, University of Cincinnati
One of the graduates presenting a speech at tonight’s ceremony is Norma Bolduc. Norma began her post secondary education at Sault College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and has recently graduated from McMaster University’s Medical Doctor Program. Norma will be working on a two-year residency in family medicine in Sault Ste. Marie and will be Batchewana First Nation’s first medical physician!
11 Scholarships will be presented to successful candidates chosen by the scholarship committee based on attitude, work ethics, essay submissions, marks and teacher/professor recommendations. Scholarships are donated through the Batchewana First Nation Education Department, Health Department, and Batchewana Band Industries.
The Batchewana Learning centre is a private school, which provides alternative education to a continuous intake of students, and is licensed by the Ministry of Education to grant high school credits and diplomas. The BLC offers Co-op programs and enhanced educational services for the local communities and aboriginal learners from a number of northern First Nations.
